The elbow ordeal

So the Sunday after Thanksgiving we were in Midland at a friends house after many warning about running in the house with socks on L fell! She started to cry and wouldn't stop, but she also would not bend her elbow all the way or extend it! My friend and my self tried everything we could to make her feel better, band-aids magic cream and nothing would help. I didn't think it was broken because well it looked normal! But I thought it would be best if we went back to my in-laws and have dad take a look at it!

When we got back her arm had started to swell she still didn't want to move it, we had two choice take her to the ER in Midland or drive back to Lubbock. I wanted to take her because well goodness we didn't know what was going on and I would hate for something to happen on the road. Josh wanted to take her back to Lubbock, which I sort of understand now! But I went ahead and took her in Midland... and well they don't keep and Orthopedic surgeon on hand and well all they could tell is that it was an occult fracture and they only knew that because of all the fluid on the joint, they stabilized her arm and sent us on our way and told me to get her to an ortho quickly! (NOT what a mom wants to hear)

So Monday I got on the phone and our pedi got us set up with a wonderful doctor! We went to his office Wednesday he took the splint off that she got in Midland and felt of her elbow tried to move it and asked her a ton of questions she did GREAT! And then he showed me what had happened and told me what kind of break he thought it was, but wanted more x-rays! He also then told me that these breaks are fixed with SURGERY! Yea the room started to spin at that point! (I found this photo online to best describe her break)

He came back and told us that Friday would be a good morning for the surgery! "Sure okay!" He stabilized her arm again, and we went home to tell dad the news! We both freaked out but well we did what had to be done! Surgery morning came we got up early and well it was really over before we knew it! The worst part was recovery! L was mad! She was mad that her cast was white, she was mad because they had a iv in her other hand and it was wrapped, she was just MAD! They told her if she would eat popsicles she could get that off her hand faster... and she did just that 3 total in a few minutes! We left the hospital at noon and by 4 pm she was up playing like nothing had ever happened!

She did really great she never complained about having the cast or that she could only wear a few shirts or that it was heavy nothing and it wasn't until the week of Christmas that she even started to say it was itching! She was such a trooper and we are so proud of her.

The time came to get the cast off and to take the pins out! We went in on Tuesdays and she laughed the whole time they were cutting the cast off, but then as soon as she saw the pins sticking out of her arm she FREAKED! But they had to take more x-rays before they could take them out so off she went screaming! When she got back I sat her in my lab and held her head away and the doc pulled them out quickly! The screaming started again, to be expected! But then the doc started to ask her about her new strawberry short cake toys and it was like nothing ever happened!
